Stereotyping has been an epidemic of sorts since the beginning of time, circumstances and other factors heavily influencing the behavior as well as the severity. A stereotype can be defined as a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. Stereotypes are adaptive and can often times enhance one’s understanding of current or future situations, while also leading one astray from the reality of the situation or circumstance (McLeod, 2008). Stereotypes occur through Stereotype Activation in which these forms of thought are activated through the mechanism of priming. As early as the 1950’s, theorists assumed that these attitudes are a result of automatic and inevitable activation in the instance of a stereotype being encountered. The process by which this activation concept works involves an individual categorically being placed into a social group; then, the traits that correlate with this particular category are activated; finally, the behav ior exhibited as an end result towards a certain subject are activated by these particular traits. Stereotyping is a huge problem in today’s world, where these actions promote discrimination against individuals for reasons that are completely unfair and unconsciously associated with negative aspects according to that individual’s social group.
