Stereotyping An Epidemic Of Sorts - 1437 Words

Stereotyping has been an epidemic of sorts since the beginning of time, circumstances and other factors heavily influencing the behavior as well as the severity. A stereotype can be defined as a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. Stereotypes are adaptive and can often times enhance one’s understanding of current or future situations, while also leading one astray from the reality of the situation or circumstance (McLeod, 2008). Stereotypes occur through Stereotype Activation in which these forms of thought are activated through the mechanism of priming. As early as the 1950’s, theorists assumed that these attitudes are a result of automatic and inevitable activation in the instance of a stereotype being encountered. The process by which this activation concept works involves an individual categorically being placed into a social group; then, the traits that correlate with this particular category are activated; finally, the behav ior exhibited as an end result towards a certain subject are activated by these particular traits. Stereotyping is a huge problem in today’s world, where these actions promote discrimination against individuals for reasons that are completely unfair and unconsciously associated with negative aspects according to that individual’s social group. Not only can stereotypes be activated by priming, but they can also be motivationally activated. In a 1999 study conducted by Kunda and Sinclair, an interpersonalShow MoreRelatedThe New World During The European Age Of Exploration Essay1615 Words   |  7 PagesThe term â€Å"virgin soil epidemic† seems quite self-explanatory; broken down, â€Å"virgin soil† clearly means untouched land, and â€Å"epidemic† is usually a word used to describe something that spreads quickly and affects a large number of people, in this case (and in most other cases), disease. Analyzing a Concept The Weight Loss Epidemic free essay sample

Stewart, M. April 28, 2011 Eng-105 Carpena, Heidi Analyzing a Concept (Weight Loss Epidemic) Weight-loss products and treatments have increased tremendously in our society, when diet pills and exercising does not work, people find other alternatives such as, lipotropic injections one of the latest weight loss solution, these injections reduces weight and increases energy with noticeable results, where as diet pills and fitness sometimes fail. Lipotropic injections are a combination of B12 amino acid compounds: methionine, choline, inositol and beta in these ingredients serve as critical agents to body’s use of fat. Lipotropic injections are injected into the muscle under the skin and fatty tissues, in certain parts of the body, these injections cause overall weight loss by increasing metabolism and energy levels. After several injections, a person should experience more energy, increased fat burning and significant weight loss, increased calories intake leads to the loss of fat from the body. Injections are given at medical clinics, weight-loss clinics, doctors offices, hospitals, and day spas by health providers, weight-loss specialists, dietitians, and a person can also administer the injection themselves when given a written prescription from their doctor. Individuals can undergo the procedure twice a week if they chose to; a person is expected to shed up to three pounds a week with a proper diet along with exercise. These injections cost about twenty dollars per injection. Lipotropic offer many health benefits aside from weight-loss, lipotropic enhance the function of liver, detoxifies the body, increases metabolism, and store glycogen, a form of glucose. If a person has a healthy liver it will properly secret bile more effectively, which aids in the digestion and the breakdown of fats. Weight loss specialists believe that lipotropic injections boost the immune system it stimulates the growth of antibodies, that help detect and destroy foreign tissues. Many claim that lipotropic injections suppress the appetite and help in the lowering of cholesterol, lipotropic are known to enhance mood, vitality and overall health. These injections are given to individuals desiring to lose weight in all parts of the body, where exercising does not work. Lipotropic injections are different from liposuction, lipotropic only help to dissolve fat from problem areas, where as liposuction is a method used to permanently remove unwanted fat from any part of the body. The possible side effects associated with the use of lipotropic injections are associated with urinary problems caused by the excessive pressure the injection puts on the kidney, depression is also a common side effect. Inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, other risks include: infections, allergic reactions, or bleeding. Individuals suffering with any kind of heart disease should always consult with their doctor before trying lipotropic or any other weight-loss product. Some peoples, who have received the injections, complain about unexplained pain in their neck, and different parts of their arms. Many patients even experience joint pains, the reason is unclear as to how lipotropic injections can cause so many discomforts and yet still remain on the market. Losing weight has never been an easy task, as the years come and go scientist are experimenting with different weight-loss methods, some turn out to be a success while others are a disappointment. Obesity is one of the world’s largest epidemics that have caused an increase on our society’s health issues. Maybe one day someone will invent a cure to fight obesity. The use of injections for weight loss is more efficient than tablets, the absorption rates are higher and the results are faster and efficient. Obesity is one of the leading cause of death in the world, it has been linked to many of today’s harmful diseases; high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, triglycerides and fatty liver disease just to name a few. There are preventive weight loss surgeries that have had a significant impact on the fight against obesity. Many individuals are struggling to lose unhealthy weight; it is easy to gain weight than to lose it. Bariatric weight loss surgery is the most successful one of them all; doctors are also considering Bariatric surgery as an instant cure for type 2 diabetes in some patients. More than half of the United States of America suffers from being overweight; this is a major health crisis that has increased throughout the years. Not only are adults at risk, but our kids are at a higher risk of becoming obese when they reach adulthood, from lack of exercising and eating right. Since the sixties the number for obese teenagers has tripled. An individual life expectancy has dropped tremendously, due to the rise in obesity sweeping the nation like the plagued. An individual main focus should be targeted towards a lifestyle change to aide in the fight against obesity; a dangerous approach would be self-starvation. We as a society must find a way to stop this plagued together, before it destroys us as one. This lifelong war on our health should seize to exist; doctors and scientists should search for a preventable cure to rid the world of this epidemic in advance if possible. A Different Approach on How to Write an Argumentative Essay Essay Example

A Different Approach on How to Write an Argumentative Essay Essay Example A Different Approach on How to Write an Argumentative Essay Essay A Different Approach on How to Write an Argumentative Essay Essay Essay Topic: Argumentative Writing an argumentative becomes very easy and simple just as long as you learn how to write an argumentative essay. This is an article that will tell you how to write an argumentative essay with ease, following these tips can even make writing the argumentative essay fun and enjoyable. The following tips are written in plain and easy English and can be understood by anyone, so make use of them to write your own argumentative essay.? Select a topic that you strongly believe in The most important thing in how to write an argumentative essay is that the topic you choose should be something that you strongly believe in. Now you must be thinking why I am saying this, the thing is that the argumentative essay is of course arguing about something, it is something like a debate, a debate you need to win. So how can you win a debate or even argue on a subject if you don’t believe in it right? This is why you need to choose a topic you strongly believe in. Another thing you need to remember is to start your argumentative essay with a sentence and not with a question. Why this is important is once again because you are supporting a subject, there is no question in that. Strong supporting points Once you have decided on the main subject or theme of your argumentative essay, you now need to decide what supporting points you are going to add to it to make it appear more solid and believable. These points should not be against your thesis but instead strong with it. Also keep in mind that your points need to be from reliable sources otherwise your essay will not be appreciated at all. Create Paragraphs Once you have decided the points, now it’s time for you to make some paragraphs. As with any other type of essay, each point will have one paragraph. Remember not to repeat the same sentences again and again but instead try to add some interesting facts about the points you are including. When you are starting the paragraph, always start with a clear statement and then continue to other smaller points, something sort of like a funnel model. Once again, if you are including a citation or something then always make sure it is from a reliable source. You could also find useful resources from other known people. Write the Introduction After you have done writing the body of the essay, it’s time for you to write an attention grabbing introduction. It is of extreme importance that you write a really good introduction because this will keep the reader interested and will take him to the main argument. But remember not to offend anyone in your argumentative essay. The Conclusion The ending of the essay is a conclusion, which also has to be written with extreme caution. Wrap up things nicely so that the reader leaves really believing in what you have been saying. Don’t extend the conclusion but instead write it in a short and sweet way.

Stock Price and Trading Volume Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Stock Price and Trading Volume - Essay Example Wood, McInish, and Ord (71), had found contradicting evidence, in the price-volume relationship. For they established the ratio between the price change and trading volume to be greater for the share prices downticks. Smirlock and Starks (64) had found that the relationship could only be supported during the time intervals when they could distinguish when the new information ex ante had reached the financial market. Due to the lack of the delivery of information to the financial market and the upbeat transaction costs, small amounts of evidence found that the relation had been lower for the up-ticks in the price than for the downticks. Data collected over an hourly basis from an extensive market index by Jain and Joh (38), had discovered the trading volume relates positively to the enormity of the price change. Findings have shown though, that the volume is more sensitive towards the positive price changes in contrast to the negative price changes. Epps, Hanna, Jain, Joh and parts of Smirlock and Starke's findings shown an implication of a positive correlation between the price change and trading volume per se. Ying's items (1) and (2) and a numerous number of researchers had found a similar positive correlation as found above. Rogalski (60) had... tedly found a positive correlation as well as Richardson, Sefcik, Thompson (58), Comiskey, Walkling and Weeks (12) all had found through tests on annual volumes of turnover and the price change to have positive traverse correlations. No such correlation had been found however by James and Edmister (39). So by looking at the empirical evidence summarized in Table 2, the two features discussed are, all the findings are from data collected from stock and bond markets, unlike previously mentioned empirical correlations between the price change and trading volume, and the data collected has not been collected from any futures markets. The statistical results found are weak, certain correlations found by Rogalski were found to be low for example and there were a couple findings that were inconsistent with a positive relationship to be found. Theoretical explanations by several authors of their findings, say the association of volume with the methodical risk through to stock returns, suggested by Morgan (51). A positive correlation between the price change and trading volume had been implied by the 'mixture of distributions hypothesis', only if the conditional indication of the stock price procession is in proportion to the quantity of new information into the market. There is however an unclear sense as to how the above could actually work. For the MDH with indicating minority is inconsistent with the markets equal balance, since it implies that the price change expected is from the arrival of new positive information into the market. Epps (20) found that a positive price change is cause for a larger volume on share transactions than for the negative price changes. His assumption that the 'bull' investors are optimists about their asset value at the close of the
